Questions to Ask Before You Hire an Electrician

A few simple questions can save you a lot of trouble. Here's what to ask before you let anyone work on your home's wiring.

When you need an electrician, you usually need one soon. But it’s worth taking a few minutes to make sure you’re hiring the right person. Here’s what we’d ask if we were in your shoes.

Are you licensed in Texas?

Electricians in Texas are licensed through the Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation, and you can look up a license on their website. A licensed electrician has the training and experience to do the job safely and up to code. Our license number is TECL #25784.

Are you insured?

If something goes wrong on the job, you don’t want to be on the hook. Ask if they carry insurance.

Will I get a price before you start?

A good electrician will look at the job, explain what’s going on, and tell you what it’ll cost before any work begins. Be careful with anyone who won’t give you a straight answer on price.

Who’s actually doing the work?

Ask whether the person you’re talking to is the one showing up, or if the job gets handed off to someone else. Either way, you want to know that whoever comes out is licensed and qualified.

Will this need a permit?

Some jobs, like panel replacements and new circuits, may need a permit and inspection from your city. A good electrician will know and take care of it.

Do I really need this?

This might be the most important question. If something sounds expensive, ask why it’s needed and what your options are. An honest electrician will explain it in plain English and won’t push you into work you don’t need.

Will you clean up when you’re done?

It sounds small, but how someone leaves your home says a lot about how they work.

What do your reviews say?

Check their Google reviews. Look for comments about showing up on time, fair prices, and honest answers. Those are usually the things that matter most.
