Your electrical panel doesn’t get much attention until something goes wrong. It sits in the garage or a hallway closet quietly sending power everywhere in the house. But panels wear out, and a lot of homes today are running more than their panel was ever built to handle.
Here are the signs it might be time for an upgrade.
1. Breakers trip all the time
A breaker tripping once in a while is doing its job. If the same ones trip every time you run the microwave and the hair dryer together, your circuits are overloaded or something is wearing out.
2. You still have fuses
If you’re still swapping out screw-in fuses, your system is decades old. Fuse boxes weren’t designed for the way we use power today.
3. Lights dim when something big turns on
A little flicker when the AC kicks on can be normal. Lights that noticeably dim every time the dryer or a window unit starts up can mean your panel or service is stretched too thin.
4. It’s warm, buzzing, or smells like something burning
Your panel should be quiet and cool. Heat, buzzing, a burning smell, or scorch marks are serious. Call an electrician right away.
5. Rust or corrosion
Moisture and electricity don’t mix. Rust inside or on the panel can lead to bad connections and breakers that don’t trip when they should.
6. It’s an older brand with a bad track record
Some older panels, like Federal Pacific Stab-Lok and Zinsco, have well-known problems with breakers that may not trip when they’re supposed to. If you have one of these, it’s worth having an electrician look it over.
7. You’re adding something big
An EV charger, a hot tub, a room addition, or a kitchen remodel can all add more load than an older panel can carry. It’s smart to have your panel checked before you start.
Sometimes you don’t need a new panel
Here’s the honest part: not every panel problem means a full replacement. Sometimes a bad breaker, a loose connection, or a circuit that needs to be split up is the real fix. One of our customers once had three different electricians tell him his panel needed replacing. It didn’t, and we told him so.
We’ll look things over, tell you straight what’s going on, and give you your options. Then you decide.
